Welcome to New Delhi. We are made up of a wonderful mix of children from Y5 and Y6 pupils ready to be challenged and learn.  To keep our pupils hydrated and energized we provide morning bagels and a water bottle.  We also encourage a healthy snack for break time.

We are using the Power Maths scheme of work along with the White Rose Maths Hub framework  as part of the Warrington Cluster group. In Y5/6 we will be working towards the end of phase expectations, therefore we ask that you continue to support us with Mymaths, multiplication knowledge by using TTRockstars as homework each week. Please ask class teachers if you need further help. 

This term we will be working on:

  • Multiplication and division facts x2 – x12 to be learnt at home
  • Percentage, decimals and fraction 
  • Ratio and Proportion (Y6)
  • Problem solving and reasoning
  • Recapping the four operations + - x /
  • Algebra and pattern (Y6)
  • Measure and comparisons

We will be completing the class novel: Kensuke’s Kingdom this term. It has a mysterious ending so be prepared for a tear or two. All Y5/6 pupils were given a Michael Morpurgo book this year. As a result, we would encourage everyone to enjoy reading their books at home and share the story with others in class.

Reading: in KS2 we follow a programme called Reciprocal teaching. This is an instructional activity that takes the form of a dialogue between teachers and students regarding segments of text for the purpose of constructing the meaning of text. Reciprocal teaching is a reading technique which is thought to promote students' reading comprehension. A reciprocal approach provides students with four specific reading strategies that are actively and consciously used to support comprehension: Questioning, Clarifying, Summarizing, and Predicting. Reciprocal teaching is to facilitate a group effort between teacher and students as well as among students in the task of bringing meaning to the text. 

Reciprocal teaching is best represented as a dialogue between teachers and students in which participants take turns assuming the role of teacher.

Reciprocal teaching is effective in the context of whole class and group collaborative investigation, which is supervised by the teacher or adult

Other areas of learning we will be covering and recapping:

  • Spellings

  • Comprehensions and reading groups
  • Reading Plus & Active Learn at home 30 minutes + per week and in school access
  • Narrative creative writing : story from a different perspective, informal letter writing, diary, news report, non-chronological reports and explanations. 
  • Weekly homework challenges 

 

 

In Science pupils will be taught to recognise that living things have changed over time, to recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents. We also learn to identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution. 

 This term we will continue the topic on Earth and Space. Children will describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system and describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth. They will examine and describe the Sun, Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies and use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.  They will also investigate properties of materials and decide which would be suitable for use on a spacecraft. 

 

 

 

  • Japanese culture and traditions compared to the UK
  • Geography: Natural Disasters. In the topic we will study volcanoes, earthquakes and extreme weather conditions around the world
  • History - a study of the Industrial Revolution and the legacy it has left upon Britain today. We will discover the impact significant people and events have had on our ancestors locally and globally to shape our lives today. 
  • British Values - Democracy, Rule of Law, Liberty, Respect and Tolerance 
  • PSHE:  Heart Smart and Jigsaw Project

 

 

Religious teaching takes place throughout the school day with daily prayers, whole school and class worship and the sharing of our gospel values. Each term we focus on a particular area of the curriculum taken from the Liverpool Diocese scheme of work:Exploring the Eucharist, Passover and the Jewish Exodus along with the school Christian values .

In French this term, we are going to be focusing on identifying and writing different types of food and drink, in order to help us write a healthy recipe and act out a trip to the market. As part of topic, we will look at traditional French foods and eating traditions.

We will then move on to learning how to say and write types of clothing in order to write descriptions of a character from the carnival.

 

Throughout the year we cover a number of PE skills and games. Canberra have PE each Monday and Cape Town and New Delhi have PE on Wednesdays. All children should have their full indoor and outdoor PE kit in school for the half term to prevent them missing out on the lessons. This term we are covering topics on balance: static balance and counter balances, team games including basketball and kabaddi  (catch the flag). 

 

 

The arts this term will be linked to the book Kensuke’s Kingdom and Japanese culture. We will also link the arts to our studies of natural disasters, Jigsaw and Heartsmart projects

Spellings

We have a spelling test every Friday. Your child will bring home their spellings on a Friday afternoon, in preparation for their test the following week.

Reading

Please can you record and sign your child’s Reading Record 3 times a week.The Reading Records are collected, from the children, every Friday and signed by the class teacher. Children are encouraged to log on and use Reading Plus as part of their weekly learning.

We held a 'Crazy-Mad' hair day.  All of the children and staff brought a bottle into school for the Christmas Fair bottle stall. In return for a bottle we came to school with wild hair styles. Take a look at our designs.
