Teaching Primary History Through Historical Concepts

At Cinnamon Brow we teach history through both substantive concepts and disciplinary concepts.

Substantive Concepts cover the knowledge of the past. Children understand the period/place/society they are studying. They understand key vocabulary. They have an overview of when the event they are studying took place and how that may link to previous learning (chronology). They make links across time periods. At Cinnamon Brow, the main substantive concepts are:

           Civilisation                                         Power/Peasantry                                                         Trade

The driving concepts that are woven through the curriculum and that are built upon and referred to throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are:

Disciplinary Knowledge is the way in which the content is presented and interpretated. How do historians construct knowledge about the past using source evidence? The main disciplinary concepts that are focussed on are:

Change and Continuity                          Handling Evidence                                      Significance
