Curriculum Statement
MFL long term curriculum overview
Why is MFL important at Cinnamon Brow?
Learning a language at a young age is incredibly valuable for all children as it helps develop cognitive abilities, boosts creativity, and can help enhance problem-solving skills. At Cinnamon Brow we are proud of the vast amount of cultures and nationalities represented across our school and our teaching of a language helps celebrate this diversity. Additionally, language learning improves academic performance across subjects, strengthens memory, and increases confidence in both social and academic settings. By supporting our children in learning a language, we are giving them a lifelong skill that will open doors to future opportunities. We want to develop pupils as ‘linguists’ who are able to communicate with others in one language by expressing their ideas and thoughts and to understand and responds to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
What does MFL look like at Cinnamon Brow?
French is taught across KS2 on a weekly basis. We encourage our children to practice these new skills throughout the week and embrace all languages when answering the register! Our French lessons help build pupil confidence by regularly onsolidating and revisiting previously learnt words and phrases. By using a mixture of activities such as actions, rhymes, stories, song, drama, grammar focus, video clips, air writing, sentence structure, dictionary work, book making and many more creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills within our lessons, pupils are exposed to a wide range of learning opportunities.
